Burlington, MA, Dec. 19, 2002 -- Thermal Engineering International (USA), Inc. (TEi), based in Los Angeles, CA, a subsidiary of Babcock Power Inc. (BPI), based in Burlington, MA, announced that it has recently received the order for replacement modular tube bundles for the steam surface condenser at Ameren's Callaway Nuclear Power Plant. The contract will be completed by October 2003.
The contract includes the design and supply of twelve large modular tube bundles, fitted with Seacure tubing, to be manufactured at TEi's condenser manufacturing facility in Pittsburg, Kansas. George Phillips, President and CEO of TEi, explained that "the traditional method to replace condenser tubes, tube-by-tube, does not meet the operating profile under which today's existing nuclear power plants have to operate. Sixteen to thirty day outages, coupled with thirty-year-old designs and material selections, require a more innovative approach, as offered by TEi."
Starting in the mid 1980's, TEi led the industry in the movement towards installing high-tech, shop-fabricated modular tube bundles in existing condenser shells. In recent years TEi has supplied replacement surface condenser tube bundles for four other large nuclear plants, as well as three fossil plants, all in the U.S.A.
Concerning the Callaway order, Mr. Phillips added that, "TEi did not supply the original condenser. Several site surveys, coupled with a detailed review of the operating history of the existing condenser, resulted in TEi's designers developing a unique approach, which optimized thermal efficiency and minimized installation time and capital investment."
TEi also provides moisture separator reheaters and feedwater heaters to nuclear facilities, feedwater heaters and surface condensers for fossil plants, and various services associated with maintaining and upgrading such heat exchangers.
Jim Wood, President and CEO of BPI, stated that, "this is an important award for our company, and a new beginning for one of the industry's oldest equipment and service suppliers".
BPI, through its subsidiaries, is a supplier of technology, equipment, and services to the power generation industry. In addition to the products and services furnished by TEi, BPI designs, manufactures and services heat recovery steam generators through its Vogt Power International subsidiary located in Louisville, KY, and provides steam generators, environmental solutions (including SCRs, flue gas scrubbers and mercury removal systems), and after market solutions to the electric utility and waste-to-energy industries through its environmental and services subsidiaries located in Worcester, MA.
